Defined zones within the annexe — a clear, predictable separation between sleeping, living and calming spaces — can help create a sense of order and reduce anxiety
A dedicated calming or retreat space
Many of our sensory-focused projects include a specific, deliberately quiet retreat area — sometimes minimal and soft-furnished, sometimes designed with specific sensory equipment in mind (weighted items, soft lighting, calming textures) — somewhere to fully decompress when needed. Where relevant, this can be designed with input from an occupational therapist or specialist familiar with the individual's specific needs.
Connection to the garden
Access to a private, calm outdoor space can be hugely valuable for sensory regulation — many individuals find genuine comfort in nature, fresh air, and having a safe, enclosed outdoor area of their own. Where possible, we design annexes with direct, easy access to a private patch of garden, away from the busier parts of a shared family garden.
